Freebies You Can Access from Your Smartphone

Posted on May 16, 2012

With the proliferation of smartphones and their millions of applications, it has never been easier to get free products and services wherever a consumer might travel. Because businesses are able to use these devices to leverage loyal customers, their shared locations, and their enthusiasm for a good deal, freebie-preferring apps are among the most popular in the iTunes Store and Android market. Here are a few of the best applications to land a freebie using a smartphone or tablet device.

Free Wifi is Just an App Away

Free deals on a smartphone are great, but wireless service providers are charging ever-higher data fees for those phones to access the mobile internet and search for such deals. To combat this, users can connect to a WiFi network whenever one is available, causing their phone to skip the 3G or 4G data network in favour of a more traditional option. However, even some public WiFi networks cost money, encouraging users to keep their phone’s WiFi turned off when in public.

That is no longer a problem with the WeFi application for Android smartphones. The application is free and it can be downloaded from the Android Market. Once installed, it will use the built-in GPS on a user’s phone to determine their location, and then display a list of all the free, open-access wireless networks around them. These networks will be listed in order of distance, with the nearest network appearing first. The list is maintained by an active community of contributors, making it a great, crowd sourced way to access free internet services.

iPhone Users can Find a Free Scoop of Ice Cream

Ben & Jerry’s is well-known for its ice cream enthusiasm, and it’s spreading that enthusiasm to iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users via a new app that promotes a free frozen treat. The app is called “Scoop of Happiness,” and it’s a free download from the iTunes App Store. Once installed, the application helps iOS users find the nearest Ben & Jerry’s retail location, and alerts them to special deals and discounts on the company’s frozen treats. And, as promised, it helps them access a free scoop of ice cream.

The company is known to have its “Free Cone Day” every year between March and May, though the date changes each year. With the Scoop of Happiness application installed, a countdown is provided that alerts users to the date of the company’s free ice cream promotion, as well as where the nearest participating store is located.

From Scoop of Happiness to Wheel of Awesomeness

Available for both Android and iOS users, Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. have created an application known as the Happy Star Rewards application. Not only does this app show great deals on burgers from the two national chains, it also contains a Wheel of Awesomeness that a user can spin each time they check into either a Hardee’s or Carl’s Jr. location.

The Wheel of Awesomeness is full of discounts and promotions, including free Thickburger sandwiches, free milkshakes, and free french fries. The wheel also contains buy-one, get-one deals, and features discounts on other popular items offered by the burger chains.

Surf, Eat, and Indulge for Fee

Smartphone freebies are a great way to get something for nothing; free internet, ice cream, and cheeseburgers are just the beginning. As more companies take advantage of this promotional opportunity, the potential for real world freebies using a virtual application looks to increase dramatically over time.
